Angie burst into Callie’s office a few minutes after Melody quit it. She was breathless and red in the face.

‘What have you been doing?’ Callie asked. ‘You look as though you just ran a marathon.’

‘Never mind all that. What did she have to say for herself?’

Before Callie could respond, Darren joined them. Unlike Angie, he looked suave and sophisticated, not a hair out of place.

‘I put her in a cab,’ he said. ‘She is not a happy bunny.’

Callie indicated the comfortable chairs in front of the full-length windows, from where they could see the activity in the reception area below them, but no one could see them. There was a lot to be said for one-way glass. Coupled with cameras in almost every area of the spa, Callie sometimes felt as though Big Brother had taken over. But that was a small price to pay for having overall control. Not much went down in her empire without Callie being aware of it. Attention to detail, she often thought, was one of the reasons why she’d made such a success of the place.

Darren wordlessly went to the coffee machine, produced brews for them all and handed them round.

‘What did you make of her performance, Darren?’ Callie asked, once he’d taken the chair beside hers and briefly checked his phone.

‘It was a performance,’ Darren replied thoughtfully. ‘I agree with you there. That one thinks on her feet and told us as little as possible. But she knows much more than she let on, that’s for sure.’

‘She didn’t let on about anything,’ Callie replied, venting her frustration with a wave of one arm.

‘She’s scared and trying hard not to show it. What’s frightened her is another matter and not something she’s likely to admit to. Her only genuine reaction was when we told her that Henry was safe and well. Interestingly though, she didn’t press for details about his captivity.’ Darren waved the hand not holding his coffee. ‘She’s a mass of contradictions and I’m not sure what to make of her.’

‘Do you think she’s involved in any way with whatever led to Henry’s abduction?’ Angie asked.

‘I don’t think we can ignore the possibility,’ Callie replied. ‘What she did tell us that I found interesting is that there’s a weekly poker school at the club. I remember Gavin starting it years ago but didn’t know it was still running. But apparently it is, and for high stakes. But get this: Fallow is not only a regular visitor to the brothel where he gets away with taking what he wants without paying, but he was also there for the poker game on the night that Henry was abducted.’

‘He has to know what went down then!’ Angie cried, bouncing on the edge of her seat. ‘We need you to press him on that, Callie.’

‘For what reason?’ Callie asked gently. ‘Henry’s safe now. If we find out who took him, what will you do about it and what will that achieve? These are dangerous people. Look what happened to Lucy.
